{"id":5328,"date":"2012-05-28T16:53:54","date_gmt":"2012-05-28T23:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5328"},"modified":"2012-05-28T19:56:50","modified_gmt":"2012-05-29T02:56:50","slug":"fairy-slipper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5328","title":{"rendered":"Fairy slipper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>fairy slipper<\/strong> or <strong>calypso orchid<\/strong> (<em>Calypso bulbosa<\/em>)\u00a0frequents cool, moist, coniferous forests, so what better place to look for it than beside our raging creeks of springtime. Yet, it is\u00a0inconspicuous on the forest floor&#8212;<em>calypso<\/em>\u00a0is a Greek word meaning hidden. And hidden is the keyword: two days ago, I spotted only one flower; today, while walking the same path, I managed to find over a dozen.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three shots of what many consider to be our most beautiful\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kootenay-lake.ca\/wildflowers\/orchids\/index.html\">wild orchid<\/a>.\u00a0These are followed by a bumble bee carrying what may be its <a title=\"Pollinia\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=1649\">pollinia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, I have only noticed the fairy slipper in isolation. So, this group was unexpected. Unfortunately, I could not move in for a closer picture as these fairy slippers were on a cliff ledge well below me.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5331\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/fairyslippers120528bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I managed to get closer to two adjacent orchids atop the cliff.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5332\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/fairyslippers120528as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other fairy slippers seen were isolated.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5330\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/fairyslipper120528cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Orchids (and a few other flowers, such as the periwinkle and dogbane) assemble their pollen into packets that the flower glues to the back of a bee. Here is a bumble bee (<em>Bombus bifarius<\/em>) carrying two pollinia (the yellow\u00a0capsules between its wings).
