Nuthatch chicks are no different&#8212;their parents must dance to their demands.<\/p>\n<p>I was fortunate to to be able to revisit the nuthatches at the Sanderson home (see, <a title=\"Tasty spider, m\u2019dear?\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5034\">Tasty spider, m&#8217;dear?<\/a>). The nuthatch couple now has chicks, and those chicks are being attended to by their diligent parents.<\/p>\n<p>Two nuthatch chicks vie for food from a parent.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5353\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/nuthatch120530ds.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now for a tasty beetle.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5369\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/nuthatch120530as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This picture makes it clear that there are three chicks in the nest. I cannot be sure of the insect being offered, although it looks somewhat like an earwig.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5367\" ondblclick=\"return false\" onmouseup=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/nuthatch120530cs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nuthatch parents not only bring food for their chicks, they also clean out the detritus. Over and over, a chick would stick its butt out the opening and extrude some\u00a0guano. The parent picks it up in its bill and carries it away.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5368\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/nuthatch120530bs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And for no better reason than that it flew by, here is a heron.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5352\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/heron120530s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Bird chicks demand obeisance.
