{"id":5482,"date":"2012-06-13T21:12:54","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T04:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5482"},"modified":"2012-06-21T07:20:46","modified_gmt":"2012-06-21T14:20:46","slug":"tails-moults-buds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5482","title":{"rendered":"Tails, moults, &#038; buds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A few days on the road have revealed patterns among cervids that were not readily apparent from the smaller sample that could be seen around my home.<\/p>\n<p>First, all that I saw were moulting from their winter coat into their summer coat.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the tails provided an\u00a0indelible\u00a0way to distinguish species.<\/p>\n<p>White-tailed Deer show off both their strikingly large tail along with some patchy moulting on the hip.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5485\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/whitetaileddeer120609s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Mule Deer shows some patchy moulting and its rope-like tail with a black tip.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5484\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/muledeer120697s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An elk shows a short white tail on a white butt, and a bit of moulting on its hip.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5483\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/elk120611s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, a male Mule Deer with tiny antler buds on its crown looks at me and asks the perennial question posed by other local animals: &#8220;Why are you pointing that camera at me?&#8221;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5486\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/muledeer1200611as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A few days on the road have revealed patterns among cervids that were not readily apparent from the smaller sample that could be seen around my home.
