{"id":5842,"date":"2012-07-12T18:43:05","date_gmt":"2012-07-13T01:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5842"},"modified":"2012-07-12T18:43:05","modified_gmt":"2012-07-13T01:43:05","slug":"miners-candleholder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5842","title":{"rendered":"Miner&#8217;s candleholder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I began scanning more of the pictures from my Grandfather&#8217;s photo album from the time he was in Silverton, New Denver, and\u00a0<a title=\"Sandon, 1909\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5818\">Sandon, 1909<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four mining pictures, three of which are from the album.<\/p>\n<p>Here is his view of the Standard Mine, located between Sandon and Silverton, but closer to Sandon.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5846\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/StandardMine1909s1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were two pictures of visitors to the mines at Silverton. Of great interest to me is what they were holding in their hands (revealed only upon the image being scanned): a prospector&#8217;s hammer and a miner&#8217;s candleholder.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5845\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/LoweryL1909as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The miner&#8217;s candleholder had four features: a holder for a candle, a handle, a sharp point for driving it into a mining timber, a hook for hanging on a miner&#8217;s hat or on a jagged piece of the rockface.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5844\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/LoweryR1909as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is a miner&#8217;s candleholder that was passed down in my family.
