Superficially, each of these birds looks like a duck, but none is. At this time of the year, each is in its eclipse plumage and so looks somewhat different than the striking breeding plumage of summer.<\/p>\n<p>This Horned Grebe was seen in the distance and against the light.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6429\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hornedgrebe120930.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Red-necked Grebe made for a much easier shot.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6428\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/redneckedgrebe120930s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Western Grebes have returned to the Lake and will be with us during the fall.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6425\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/westerngrebes120930as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We saw five different Common Loons.
