Opportunities to take one&#8217;s camera for a walk\u00a0diminish. Below is a grab bag of mostly birds taken between raindrops.<\/p>\n<p>A White-crowned Sparrow scrounges for seeds at Nelson&#8217;s waterfront.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6634\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/chippingsparrow121024s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I see one or two Common Loons most days. Usually they are beyond the reach of my camera: in the dawn twilight, and far away in the rain.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6626\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/loon121026bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Horned Grebes often pass by.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6632\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/hornedgrebe121025s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Much less common to see is the Red-necked Grebe.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6633\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/redneckedgrebe121024s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This female Hooded Merganser was a bit unexpected, especially as she has her hood erected. Odd.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6631\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/redbreastedmerganser121101as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But, a female mallard is about as\u00a0common\u00a0as it gets.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6627\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/mallard121192s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A white-tailed doe was seen in the rain across a field at twilight. That&#8217;s\u00a0nothing special, but this one struck me as a bit unusual. Look at its ears. A deer can\u00a0swivel its ears to listen for danger in front or behind, but this was the first one I have noticed doing both at once: one ear forward, the other backward.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6628\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/whitetaileddeer121029s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, two shots of an immature Bald Eagle. This is one of two seen soaring.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6629\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/baldeagle121028s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And landing&#8212;well, it isn&#8217;t clear that this is the same bird as above, it might be the other one.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6630\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/baldeagle121102s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The days shorten, the clouds lower, the rain falls.
