It is a good descriptor for many of the things I see: I head out for A, and happen on B&#8212;<em>en passant<\/em>. Here are some examples.<\/p>\n<p>I was watching <a title=\"Cute chick\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=8294\">chicks of the Spotted Sandpiper<\/a> when I saw a Northern Rough-winged Swallow.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8425\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/roughwingedswallow130704s1.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was looking for the <a title=\"Three-toed Woodpecker\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=8279\">Three-toed Woodpecker<\/a> when I saw the chick of a Roughed Grouse.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8426\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/roughedgrousechick130702s.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was looking for <a title=\"Osprey family\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=8390\">Osprey chicks<\/a> when I saw a Yellow-bellied Marmot (who had been feeding on flowers).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8427\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/marmot130719s.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was looking for some more Osprey chicks when I spotted a <del>Barn<\/del> Cliff Swallow chick in its nest.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8428\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/barnswallow130719s.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was hunting the familiar<a title=\"Crab spider\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=8176\"> crab spider<\/a> (<em>Misumena vatia<\/em>) on flowers and I encountered its even smaller (and hairier) relative&#8212;possibly a <em>Misumenops asperatus<\/em>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8432\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/crabspider130627s.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upon returning from the Osprey expedition, I watched a Song Sparrow capture a dragonfly larva.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8430\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/songsparrow130719s.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Again, the trip to look for Osprey chicks, revealed the landing of a Great Blue Heron.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/heron130719as.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; En passant is a French term used to describing something that happens merely in passing.
