Alternative reality

Nelson City Council now requires the head of every household to own a gun and ammo to “provide for the emergency management of the city” and “provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants.” The new law does have exemptions for felons and the mentally ill.

Bizarre? Jarring? Yes, but that is the story out of Nelson, Georgia, a community of 1300 in the southern U.S.

This is truly a Nelson in an alternative reality.

Nelson in our reality: gun ownership is not required.

I am indebted to my daughter, Cynthia, for pointing out this odd story.

The world is indeed an interesting place. Thanks for the comparison story, Alistair, and for the great picture of Nelson – it’s nice to see the old territory. Sure makes me glad to be Canadian.

I like our Nelson better and what a great shot of the town.

Haha lol, you had me going there for a few seconds! For a moment I thought our dear old loveable, lovely, peace-loving Nelson had just been taken over by a pack of paranoid, triggerhappy “shoot first n’ ask questions later” types! In the Nelson that I know, the only things that should be required by law are not guns to shoot with but cameras, to get as many shots of the endless beauty as possible. There’s so much beauty, it’s amazing you can fit it all in one place!

Speaking of loveliness, thank you for what you share in your lovely blog full of such gorgeous sharp photos that are full of your love for the Kootenays and Kootenay denizens!!
    Danny in Edmonton 🙂

Danny, do I detect just a hint of homesickness?

      • Danny Lane Anderson says:

Yes your homesickness detector is working fairly well! I lived not far away in Penticton for a couple years recently and did try to move to Nelson. ..But alas it was not to be and I’ve often been pining for the B.C. Interior – especially the West Kootenay – since I ended up back here in Edmonton (technically my hometown, but truly home is where the heart is and Heart is where Home is. Thankfully I’ve just gotten longterm volunteer work up the lake from you N. of Kaslo, so my homesickness will end next month!! :o)
