Like many birds, the Pileated Woodpecker is now encouraging its young to fly around.
This male Pileated Woodpecker is likely a juvenile. Its crest is a bit small, its moustache is only slightly red, and its eyes have only the faintest touch of yellow. Also, it did not seem to know how to find food on a tree.

I was indeed relieved when a possibly young PW who flew into my living room window reflecting the forest, already with strong enough neck muscles to withstand the impact; after a short few minutes regaining its equilibrium while sitting on the grass, was able to fly to the trunk of a very high Douglas Fir tree in my lower yard, to cling to the bark, even while being harassed by a squirrel, but kept crawling up the trunk higher and higher into the branches. I’ve thumb-tacked 7 hanging ribbons above the window in that room now, as deterrence; yet must do same tomorrow above the deck window, where a young flicker met its demise when it flew into it, breaking its neck from the impact. There’s been such a lot of activity in my back yard, around the Red Osier Dogwood shrubs for the berries from both those woodpeckers, and robins too!
