Black bear returns

With the return of a large brown black bear, I managed a good shot of it looking in my direction. A striking thing about it were the crests of the shoulder and hip humps. With black bears, hips are higher than shoulders, and this is obvious here.

Of course, with grizzlies, back height is the other way around: shoulders are higher than the hips.

A large black bear looks, just before it vanished.

That’s one big friendly grin for you, Alistair!

Ahm, dear uncle Alistair, as I am under the impression of the Leonardo-Di-Caprio movie „The Revenant“ I am very relieved that you obviously survived your foto-shooting. Your nephew Christoph Hantel from Ulm Germany

Christoph, the bear in The Revenant was a grizzly. They tend to be combative. My visitor was a black bear, which despite their strength, tend to be remarkably timid. I was not threatened. You do not have black bears in Europe, but we have both grizzlies and black bears here.

    Such a superb specimen!
And apparently wise enough to know who to pose for to get the perfect portrait of himself.
