Coming and going

 

The fall is a time of many transitions. Here are two.

A Black Meadowhawk was seen flying around today. November 2nd is late for any dragonfly to be about.

Meanwhile, Bufflehead Ducks fly in. They are rare in summer, but common in winter.

    Thanks for the lovely dragonfly photo, Alistair. We still see the odd fly out-and-about in the daytime, but the most surprising to me are the hardy little moths that come out in the evening, they’re still flying at 0 C. I hope to spot some snow scorpions up here this winter. You definitely have those interesting little creatures down in the West Kootenay.
