Wolf

I have not seen a wolf, but Doug Thorburn has—or at least his trail camera has. High in the Selkirk Mountains just south of Nelson, it captured a number of images of a foraging Grey Wolf.

I had wondered whether the camera might have recorded a feral dog. After all, the Grey Wolf does resemble a largish German Shepard. But no, experts confirm that Doug’s picture does show a wolf.

South of Nelson? this is troubling news for the South Selkirk caribou herd….

  2. Douglas Thorburn says:

Alistair, Eileen, the camera is actually placed within an area designated as a “caribou recovery” habitat, which is contiguous with the West arm park. While not core habitat, these areas have been reserved from logging as suitable habitat for an expanding herd. Sadly, the caribou herd seems to be contracting rather than expanding lately, largely due to predation.

Doug, I have also been told that caribou have yet to be seen in the caribou recovery habitat to the east of there (above the Harrop-Procter Community Forest). I wish we could get the caribou to read the manuals.
