The male Ruffed Grouse will display its ruff and fan its tail during spring courtship. It is unclear why this bird is displaying and calling in early October (two pictures).
Hi Alistair,
There is evidence to suggest that young males begin to ‘practice’ display and drumming by late fall and even more evidence to confirm that old males display and drum to ward off the young males.
Thanks Alistair, really gorgeous pics. It was for you and your love of nature. I love to remember nature is intelligent and takes every opportunity to communicate with us, and to teach us how to be in harmony with It. This is one reason I enjoy and appreciate the details and behaviours your photos capture.
Excellent! What a beauty , odd indeed.

Great shots, and as usual not so typical.

Bill, neat. So, the male Ruffed Grouse’s fall display is sort of the equivalent of a female human’s training bra.
