Grizzly family

A sighting of Grizzly Bears in the South Selkirks revealed a more healthy looking family than the lone bear seen elsewhere. These grizzlies appeared to be feeding on tubers, rather than the grass the gaunt grizzly relied upon.

Displaying the confidence of the callow, a cub surveys its world in the dim light before sunrise.

Nearby a sow stands over her other two cubs (lower left and right) as they feed.

Here the whole family is seen feeding together in the yellowish light of sunrise.

At one point the adventuresome cub dug deep in the earth and ate something. As it climbed out, it shook off the dirt just as a dog or otter would shake off water.

Buddies.

Absolutely great shots. Why anyone would wish to trophy hunt these animals is beyond me. Thanks for sharing.

A bear biologist told me that the females teach the cubs how to interact with humans by teaching them where to find food. This family was very close to the gardens and orchards in the valley below, yet was rooting through the cleared land for roots. We have been watching this group for a month or so and they tend to travel between the numerous clearcuts. They look healthy with beautiful coats.

She was taught well by her mother.

Lovely photos. The cubs have such personality 🙂

Thank you for these beauties, Alistair. Sharing habitat with these marvellous animals is certainly reason to give thanks that we live in British Columbia. Hopefully more people can share space with them, rather than take from them. Agree 100% with your comment above, Bob.
