The only question remaining for this one is which month on the calendar? Does this properly represent a July in the West Kootenay?

    • Alistair says:

Doug, chuckle. Yes, when I found this (amongst many throwaways), I said to myself: That is a calendar-ready shot. And you are right, August is a somewhat more appropriate month for the migration of the Greater Yellowlegs though our area, although they do pass through from mid July to mid September. This one was seen at KCPP yesterday.

I think this shot could be very recent and does represent July here. This looks like a juvenile based on the lack of dark streaks on the flanks and the sharp streaking on the neck. Could be an adult if it finished molting a bit early. Shorebird migration is in full swing in the Kootenays right now and almost anything could show up, but probably in small numbers except for Creston.

Max, points accepted. There is another possibility: Some sites note that the “failed” breeders are the first to migrate, something consistent with your suggestion of a juvenile.
