Otter dawn

Why do so many interesting things take place off in the distance prior to sunrise—a time when observing and photographing are difficult?

This morning’s early light brought five cavorting otters to a local dock. This is probably the same group that offered me the ogopogo moment last March, now apparently reduced by one. Other than this group, I have only seen otters one at a time this year.

Five otters on a dock: three romping (left), one staring at the Lake (centre); one playing with a rope (right).

A slightly closer view of four of the otters.

Very nice picture, especially if the light was bad

Ken, the light was bad. These were hand-held shots at a high ISO and they had to be strongly filtered for digital noise. In the days of film, these probably would have been impossible pictures.

Incidentally, we have decided that the contemplative otter staring out at the Lake was Mommy. She was thinking: “I do know they will grow up eventually, but how long do I have to wait?”

Oh my goodness, I would love to have seen this. River otters are starting to come back in our area. I haven’t seen one yet, but they are here. Can’t wait until I get to see one!

…haha! I think you’re right about the contemplative otter!
