Recently, I have shown Great Blue Herons capturing rather large Kokanee salmon (blog.kootenay-lake.ca/?p=35850 and https://blog.kootenay-lake.ca/?p=35862). The first picture shows, what I think is the same bird.
Now, about 700 metres away, I show another (the same?) heron that was confined to capturing many rather small things just to get enough to eat (Sept. 25).
On Aug.19, the day after capturing a large Kokanee, this heron resumed its search for food.
After quietly watching the water, the heron plunged its bill deep into a pond.
But, it missed and had to blow out the water it had sucked in.
Sometimes it did catch something, such as this slug.
After repeated attempts, it caught (and ate) a small fish. These attempts went on for a long time as the heron sought enough food to eat. But the wind picked up (see blown feathers). When it started to rain, I abandoned the heron.
Wonderful. Your photos are not something to just glance at. They draw me in for a closer study.
What “phone” (I mean camera) do you use?
