Squirrel eating

I watched a red squirrel on a tree branch eating what looked like a cob of corn. But, this couldn’t be correct for, given the squirrel’s size, this was a tiny object. Doug Thorburn told me, “I think it is a seed pod (or strobile) from a birch tree.  These seeds will be ripe in the fall, and are dispersed by winter storms.”
