Creeks fill with spawning kokanee salmon; bears come to feast; people come to watch. Mind you, it is not easy to coordinate a visit with the bears: They follow their own clocks.
This has been a rather good year to watch spawning kokanee.
There are two families of black bears working the creek. This is the sow of one of them.
When she catches a fish, she moves it to the bank and leaves it there after maybe a nibble of two.
This is one of her two cubs that she has left high in a tree until she has gathered food for all.
It is time to call the cubs down from their perch.
A cub arrives at the ground and is greeted by mommy.
I am so glad to see all the fish in that creek! Was at the Meadow Creek spawning channel on the first and there was not one fish in those channels. Plus the whole area has electric fencing around it, this is to keep both man and beast out. I was told that the water was too warm for the fish to spawn. Hope some fish find their way to the north end of the lake, I will keep on checking.
Marj.
Marjorie, I showed a channel on the West Arm. The North Arm population is genetically different and it spawns perhaps three weeks later. They will come.
Ah — more than meteor chips now at Meadow Creek!
